Windows XP search companion could be modified to look like Windows 2000: you just need to create a string value in your registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersionExplorer\CabinetState]
with name = "Use Search Asst" and value = "no"
You can also alter the look and functionality of the search companion using another animated screen character (e.g. Merlin instead of puppy dog) or disabling ballon tips...
