Patching is one of the most boring activity of a System Administrator, the activity require technical operation (install patches) and social operation (notify users for possible downtime or schedule the right time for restart); the second task become awful if the patch require restart and there are SLA (Service Level Agreements) or 24 hours server's usage.
Microsoft Article 887012, describe how to reduce chances of being prompted to restart the server; the logic is pretty simple, if something to be patched is locked, just unlock before patch the server.
